Amy Barickman is an RJR fabric designer and founder of the pattern company Indygo Junction and AmyBarickman.com. Today she shares her new brand Fabriflair™ - material amusements for needle and thread! Think English paper piecing in 3-D! Here is a video that explains the product and creative process.
Cotton & Steel fabrics are some of my favorites! We have featured their prints in both our apparel and purse patterns. When we were scouting fabric for our Fabriflair™ Radiant Star, I was immediately drawn to this Rifle Paper Co. collection Les Fleurs. I love the small scale floral and novelty prints, not to mention the fabulous metallic flora print. The 5” square precut is ideal because you can cut 2 diamonds from one square. Another precut option is using the 2.5“ strip, which can be cut on the diagonal. Keep in mind with the strips you will have lots leftover.
I am happy to share some tips and tricks for making the Radiant Star with you. We offer both a kit with pre-cut mat board templates as well as a PDF pattern. You need 60 diamonds to create the star, so the kit is a great short cut and provides precise pieces for a guaranteed fit. I also like to add a layer of batting between the fabric and template. Not only does it provide a nice visual effect, but it also makes it easier to sew the templates together when the batting is sandwiched in between. This instructional information is included in both the pattern and kit.
Keep in mind the Fabriflair™ Star is a wonderful project to showcase buttons. The buttons are sewn in once the 12 facets of the star are finished but before they are sewn together one half at a time. I collect all things vintage and sewing so you can imagine my button stash. We debated between gold and mother-of-pearl—a tough decision!
Now on to some options for sewing the 12 facets of the star together. You can try stitching edges together with a whip or ladder stitch. We also like using no. 10 crochet thread and the blanket stitch. You will need about 5 stitches on each edge of the diamond. Both stitch options are ideal for finishing the Radiant Star.
The Fabriflair™ Radiant Star comes in a small and large- a 5” and a 10” version. There are currently six kits available in the line including the Brio Sphere/Bowl in 2 sizes, the Trilliant Ornament and the Navette Needlecase. Fabriflair™ is a perfect way to display your favorite designer prints in a practical project or a geometric work of art! AND pre-cuts that are available make it easy to get small cuts of a variety of prints to work with!
